Since opening its doors in 1939, Mellon has been a place where students discover new interests, build lasting friendships, and prepare for the opportunities ahead. As one of Mt. Lebanon's historic school buildings, Mellon has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of students while remaining an important part of the community.

A Place For Middle Level Learning

Originally constructed as Mellon Junior High School, the building reflected the District's commitment to providing dedicated learning spaces for students during a time of continued growth.

In 1983, changing enrollment patterns led to the temporary closure of the District's junior high buildings. Just over a decade later, growing student enrollment created the need for dedicated middle schools once again.

In 1998, Mellon reopened as one of Mt. Lebanon's two middle schools, welcoming students in grades 6–8 and helping establish the District's current grade configuration.
Named After Andrew Mellon
- Mellon Middle School is named in honor of Andrew W. Mellon, the Pittsburgh industrialist, philanthropist, and former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, who served from 1921 to 1932 under Presidents Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover.
- One of the most influential public figures of his era, Mellon's leadership shaped both the nation's financial policies and the Pittsburgh region through his philanthropy and civic contributions.
Continuing the Story
- A major renovation completed in the early 2000s modernized the building, creating updated learning spaces while preserving the character and traditions that generations of students remember.
- Today, Mellon Middle School continues to foster curiosity, collaboration, and personal growth, providing students with a strong academic foundation and a welcoming environment as they prepare for the transition to high school.
