Mellon Teacher Gains National Geographic Educator Certification

Mellon Middle School Studies Teacher Mr. Matt Mikesell was recently informed that he has completed National Geographic Educator Certification. National Geographic Educators are committed to teaching their students about the world and how it works, empowering them to succeed and to make it a better place. There is a three-step process involved in earning certification: 1) The educator must take the Introductory Workshop focused on the National Geographic’s  philosophy of teaching about the world and the National Geographic Learning Framework; 2) Implement a set of activities or lessons built upon a lesson, activity or tool from NatGEoEd.org and a second lesson inspired by a list of themes; 3) Submit a capstone report and video that clearly shows students’ increase in attitudes, skills or knowledge areas outlined in the National Geographic Learning Framework.

This professional development program builds educators’ skills in generating classroom activities that are interdisciplinary and centered around real-world problems at local, regional, and global scales. Participants also gain an understanding of the National Geographic Learning Framework, a standards-aligned tool designed to develop an explorer’s mindset in students of any age.

Congratulations to Mr. Mikesell on this outstanding accomplishment.
