Did you know that 6th grade students — and many 7th & 8th graders — at Mellon get the chance to conference one-on-one with an adult on their writing assignments?
This unique opportunity helps our students become strong, confident writers and prepares them for high school.
We need parent, grandparent, or community volunteers to keep the Writing Lab running!
Why volunteer?
Conferencing with students on personal essays and creative writing is rewarding and fun.
You don’t need to be a professional writer — just a good listener and encourager!
What does volunteering involve?
Sit with a student during the school day.
Listen as they read their paper aloud.
Offer positive encouragement and constructive feedback using a provided rubric.
Pick from flexible timeslots: from once a month to multiple times a week.
Reflections is an optional project that students work on independently at home. Categories include visual arts, photography, literature, music composition, film production and dance choreography. This year's theme is I Belong! Several Mellon students will have the opportunity to advance to the regional and then possibly the state level of the competition.
Entries are due by October 25th. Entries in visual arts, literature, music composition, film production and dance choreography will be submitted digitally and require two steps.
PA Reflections has provided a summary of the rules. Please be sure to read the rules carefully to make sure each entry qualifies and is submitted correctly. The rules can be found here.
